Chuckles 46, Laughs 13, Belly Laughs 3
Notes: Pee Wee was a HUGE deal in the mid 1980's and this was his first movie. This was also the first movie ever directed by Tim Burton who hired Danny Elfman for the soundtrack. Elfman had his own band at the time called Oingo Boingo (probably best known for the song "Weird Science"). I saw Pee-Wee's Big Adventure when it came out originally this is the third time overall. When it was released, it was totally fresh and unique. Nobody had seen anything like Pee Wee Herman. Watching it many years later, I still enjoyed it and chuckled throughout but it's different seeing it now. You may notice at the top of this page, there's a photo of a Charlie McCarthy mannequin sitting next to a Pee Wee Herman doll, taken of my antique sofa. Interestingly, there's a scene early in the movie where Pee Wee picks up a Charlie mannequin and plays with him. I'd totally forgotten about that and had paired them myself on my office sofa truly by accident so that was a surprise to see. The first time I saw the scene with "Large Marge" and the scene where Pee Wee jumps on a motorcycle and crashes through the billboard at the biker bar made me cry laughing. It doesn't quite have the same effect on me now but they are still great scenes! The Tequila dance is still iconic. Favorite line by Pee Wee: "Everyone I know has a big but.. Come on Simone, let's talk about your big but!" Cute movie. Lots of chuckles throughout and is very family friendly. RIP Paul Reubens/Paul Reubenfield. Would I watch it again? I'm sure I will one day.
