Here is the list of the 100 Funniest Movies that I've had the opportunity to review! If you don't see your favorite comedy on this list, please check COMING SOON and if you don't see it there, please check the "Best of the Rest" page as it didn't score enough points to make it on the top 100 funniest movies of all time list.
100. The Pest (1997) - 68.5 Points
Chuckles 61, Laughs 23, Belly Laughs 5
Notes: At the beginning of the film you wonder if this is a Hispanic version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off with John Leguizamo singing and clowning in the shower like Ferris. Both movies also share the same antagonist; Jeffrey Jones (Principal Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueller) but that's where the differences stop. I'm a huge fan of John Leguizamo and have seen his comedy act in person on two occasions and I find him extremely talented and extremely funny. The acting in this movie is horrible and this film reminds me a lot of Beverly Hills Ninja with Chris Farley in that it's a weak movie but the star carries it and somehow its mostly funny anyway. John Leguizamo reminds me a lot of Bugs Bunny; dancing, joking and being silly in the face of dangerous situations. I did laugh (mostly chuckle) but I almost stopped watching twice and had to force myself to continue. If you're a fan of John Leguizamo, he's at his comedic best in this film. John Leguizamo needs a comedy that is on par with his talent. If such a movie exists, I'd love to see it (he's pretty funny in Moulin Rouge though he's not the star of the movie).
Would I watch it again? No.
99. National Lampoons Vacation (1983) - 68.5 Points
Chuckles, 18 Laughs, 7 Belly Laughs
Notes: This movie is very much like Planes, Trains and Automobiles - the ridiculously challenging road trip where everything goes wrong. I saw this movie only once, when I was a teenager, in the movie theater but yet, somehow I knew most of the lines, probably because my friends and I would recite them so often (so many quotable lines). This movie is rated "R" and I cringed when my parents walked in and sat down two rows in front of me. They left about mid-way through, outraged by... any number of things. I did not leave because I was pretty sure they hadn't seen me there. This is a John Hughes movie starring Chevy Chase, who was red-hot in the 1980's. It was so hilarious to see their computer. I love their hilarious station wagon (the "family truckster"). I was taken aback by Anthony Michael Hall's joy in every scene. He genuinely seemed to be enjoying himself. It was so surprising to see a young Jane Krakowski (30 Rock). My favorite character is still Randy Quaid playing "Uncle Eddie!"
Would I watch it again? Yes. I'm surprised that I've not seen it more than once in all these years!
98. Hot Fuzz (2007) - 68.5 Points
Chuckles 49, Laughs 26, Belly Laughs 6
Notes: I had seen this film in the past year and considered delaying it for fear that I wouldn't find it funny again, watching it again so soon. I believe I found it nearly as funny as I had the first time. This movie for the most part in a small town in England and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost from Shaun of the Dead, shot 3 years earlier. Obviously they had great chemistry and it shows in both films.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
97. Shaolin Soccer (2001) - 68.5 Points
Chuckles 41, Laughs 15, Belly Laughs 11
Notes: 20 years ago I was shopping for a new TV at a major electronics store and I happened to catch some of the craziest action I'd ever seen on the screen. I asked one of the sales people what was playing and it was a movie I'd never heard of called Shaolin Soccer. As soon as I could find the DVD, I bought it and it has remained one of my favorite movies ever though I'd not seen it now for a number of years. This is the most entertaining soccer you could possibly imagine in the tradition of the kung fu movies of the 1970's, which I absolutely love. Stephen Chow is one creative, imaginative, talented writer, director and actor! I wish this movie scored a higher placement on the list but it's a solid score. This movie has plenty of laughs, hopefully enough to earn a spot as one of the 100 funniest movies of all time.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
96. UHF (1989) - 69 Points
chuckles 58, Laughs 16, Belly Laughs 8
Notes: This movie features "The Nanny, Kramer, Long Duk Dong" as well as Weird Al and co-written by Weird Al who runs a UHF station with programming including, lesbian Nazi hookers abducted by UFO's and forced into weight loss programs is going to score laughs. I hadn't seen this movie in many, many years and enjoyed the silly-goofy (Weird Al-esque) humor which is parody heavy, somewhat sophomoric, cleverly-stupid and definitely fun!
Would I watch it again? Maybe. Probably.
95. The Hangover II (2011) - 69.5 Points
Chuckles 39, Laughs 14, Belly Laughs 12
Notes: The original Hangover scored 83 points and even though this one didn't score as high, it's still funny. That being said, Hangover II is truly "more of the same" and I think it's that way by design. They had a winning formula and didn't want to mess with it. The downside is that if you saw the first Hangover movie, you're not really missing much by electing not to see the second (or third). That's not to say there's not great chemistry with the main characters and funny scenes because there definitely is.
Would I watch this again? No. I think I'm done.
94. The Out-Laws (2023) - 69.5 Points
Chuckles, 57, Laughs 23, Belly Laughs 6
Notes: This action comedy stars the very funny Adam Devine (Workaholics) and is produced by Adam Sandler and Adam Devine with Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin as the future in-laws who are juxtaposed with Devine's character (Owen) who plays a straight-laced bank manager. Lauren Lapkus plays a competing bank manager and is great! This is a very funny movie and I really enjoyed it.
Would I watch it again? Yes! Definitely would.
93. Tropic Thunder (2008) - 69.5 Points
Chuckles 51, Laughs 17, Belly Laughs 9
Notes: In a comedy with comedians Ben Stiller and Jack Black, it's Tom Cruise who surprisingly delivers the funniest lines as a balding, pudgy, middle-aged executive producer. It was also interesting (and weird/unnerving) to see Robert Downey Jr. as a "soul brother" for most of the film though I either couldn't hear or understand a number of his lines. This is one of many movies that I saw before, remembered as being hilarious but when I watched it again and actually kept score, it didn't score as high as I thought it would.
Would I watch it again? Maybe.
92. Thor - Ragnarok (2017) - 70.5 Points
Chuckles 73, Laughs 19, Belly Laughs 5
Notes: Well, I didn't expect this movie to make it as one of the top comedies of all time, considering that it's not a comedy but a super hero-action film but Taika Waititi had other plans. From beginning to end, this is an action packed, hilarious movie. The funniest scenes are with Thor and The Incredible Hulk but throw in Jeff Goldbloom as an eccentric ruler of a planet and some great scenes with Thor and Loki - there's a lot to laugh about despite the fact that there is much death and destruction in this film. I also love Taika's character, Korg!
Would I watch it again? Absolutely!
91. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) - 70.5 Points
Chuckles 45, Laughs 18, Belly Laughs 10
Notes: I've watched this movie several times over the years and it's one of my favorites. I was concerned that even though I love it, it might not score high, like the movie, Big. Well, it did score well and it was fun to watch once again. This is another of the most iconic comedies of the 80's. John Hughes wrote and directed a masterpiece of fun and one of the rare high school movies that wasn't raunchy. I have always remembered Ferris' words when he said, "life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Love the "Twist and Shout" scene where John Hughes pays homage to another great Chicago comedy, The Blues Brothers. Favorite moment was probably where his sister kicks Rooney in the face 3x. It's a brilliant movie. Great soundtrack.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
90. Flying Deuces (1939) - 70.5 Points
Chuckles 27, Laughs, Belly Laughs 13
Notes: I hadn't seen this classic Laurel & Hardy movie since my childhood and it was just as amazing, just as funny as I remembered and there were parts that I didn't remember at all that were a joy to watch, including hearing Ollie sing and Stan dance. Also, Stanley makes a harp out of bed springs in prison and plays it!!! Was the harp a common instrument that everyone played in the 1930's? This movie is only an hour and 9 minutes long, about 30-40 minutes shorter than nearly all comedy films yet it still racked up an impressive 70.5 points.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
89. Nacho Libre (2006) - 71 Points
Chuckles 60, Laughs 23, Belly Laughs 6
Notes: It feels very "Napoleon Dynamite" at the beginning probably because Jared Hess directed both movies. The premise is decent but I feel like it really needed Jack Black to pull it off. He absolutely carries the movie. His expressions and mannerism, his accent, etc... comedy gold! It's a quirky and interesting, cute and funny enough to check out even if you aren't a fan of Jack Black. If you are a fan, you'll likely love this film. I am a fan.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
88. What We Do in the Shadows (2014) - 71 Points
Chuckles 42, Laughs 17, Belly Laughs 11
Notes: I saw this movie when it came out at the historic Tampa Theatre and absolutely loved it. I'm a huge fan of Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and saw Taika Waititi for the first time (the two star in the movie, co-wrote and co-produced the film). This is a "mocumentary" featuring 4 vampires that live in the same flat together and their arch-rivals, the werewolves, headed by Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords). There are so many hilarious lines.
"We're werewolves, not swearwolves!"
"“I was thinking, maybe... I just should bring a broom down here for you if you wanted to sweep up some of the skeletons.”
This is the movie that inspired the streaming series on Hulu.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
87. A Night at the Opera (1935) 71.5 Points
Chuckles 49, Laughs 23, Belly Laughs 8
Notes: I love the Marx Brothers and either I hadn't seen this movie before or it had been so long since I'd seen it, I didn't remember it but is packed with laughs. This movie has the typical Marx Brothers success combination of Groucho playing the scoundrel big shot that doesn't mind poking fun at everyone around him, trying to woo actress, Margaret Dumont. At some point he crosses paths with his brothers; Chico and Harpo who add to the chaos and hilarity. Chico is magical on the piano and Harpo on the Harp and this was the first time I saw Harpo play the piano, which was surprising. I could do without all the singing but the film is called "A Night at the Opera" and I think it was common for movies at this time to include singing, to add layers to the entertainment. In many ways these old films are a time capsule, which makes watching them even more fun.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
86. This is Spinal Tap (1984) - 72 Points
Chuckles 32, Laughs 19, Belly Laughs 9
Notes: I'd never seen this movie before but it was rated in the top 10 and actually #1 on other people's lists of funniest movies of all time so I thought I'd check it out. I fell asleep part way through but that was my fault for going to sleep at 3am the night before. When I played the DVD (I couldn't find it streaming anywhere) for the second time, I found that I liked it. This is a mockumentary of a rockumentary filmed/narrated by Meathead (Rob Reiner). I was so intrigued by Michael McKean who I loved as Squiggy (on Laverne & Shirley) and I'm currently watching him "Better Call Saul." He really does a great British accent and it seems like he's actually playing guitar and; singing - quite brilliantly! I enjoyed cameos by Billy Crystal and Dana Carvey (who appear as mime-waiters). The bit with Stonehenge was hilarious as was the Cleveland show where they couldn't find their way to the stage. It's a funny movie and I can see why it's so iconic though I can't see how anyone could give it a top 10 billing on the list of the funniest movies of all time. We'll see if it can hold on to a spot on my top 100. I hope it does but I still have 200 movies to watch and score. Fingers crossed!
Would I watch it again? Maybe.
85. Happy Gilmore (1996) - 73.5 Points
Chuckles 35, Laughs 14, Belly Laughs 14
Notes: Adam Sandler makes "feel good" comedies and this one is a great example. Wanting to win the golf tournament to be able to get his grandmother's house back causes a wanna-be hockey player to take golf. Love Carl Weathers in this one as well as Bob Barker ("The Price is wrong, Bob!"). I hadn't seen this movie in many years and thoroughly enjoyed it. Would I watch it again? Yes.
84. Black Sheep (1996) - 75 Points
Chuckles 36, Laughs 21, Belly Laughs 13
Notes: I either had never seen this movie before or it's been so long that I'd completely forgotten about it. I think that Chris Farley and David Spade are a perfect pairing but the chemistry between the two isn't quite as good as it is in Tommy Boy. It's still good but just not at that level. This movie is funny, much funnier than Beverly Hills Ninja for me.
Would I watch it again? Maybe.
83. Airplane II (1982) - 75.5 Points
Chuckles 63, Laughs 23, Belly Laughs 7
Notes: If you saw the first Airplane movie, there's really no need to watch the second one in my opinion unless you simply wanted to see William Shatner in a comedy. Although there are jokes and laughs, the first movie is funnier and they rehash many of the same jokes/gags that were in the first one. Although, if you missed the first one, the second one is funny, especially if chuckles are your thing and could stand on its own.
Would I watch it again? No.
82. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) - 76 Points
Chuckles 58, Laughs 23, Belly Laughs 8
Notes: I watched this two years ago for the first time (I know, it's a lot of people's favorite Christmas movie and they grew up with it) and thought it was only mildly funny. For whatever reason, watching it for a second time, it scored a good number of points because I found it even funnier and was actually pretty surprised that it made it onto the top 100 funniest movies of all time to be honest. I grew up a huge fan of Chevy Chase but it was really Randy Quaid as "Uncle Eddy" who stole the show for me.
Would I watch it again? Yes, I'd likely watch it again.
81. Blockheads (1938) - 76 Points
Chuckles 50, Laughs 33, Belly Laughs 6
Notes: Laurel and Hardy are comedy greats for a reason. This movie is set in WWI. I love the physicality of their humor. This is one of their very best. It's very funny and one of my favorites, even if it doesn't score in the top 20 movies reviewed. I love this movie.
Would I watch it again? Absolutely! One of my all time favorites!!!
80. Windy City Heat (2003) - 77 Points
Chuckles 42, Laughs 17, Belly Laughs 13
Notes: The plot centers around a guy who is either very vane or stupid or unbelievably delusional who is auditioning for a part in a fake movie and everyone is "in on it" except him. He gets the part and begins filming the movie and things go off the rails. I'd heard several guests on "Hot Ones" (youtube) reference it as their favorite comedy. I had a hard time finding this movie and ended up paying to watch it on youtube. I did laugh a lot but I can't help but if this is real or what. If the central character (Perry Caravello) is acting, he's really, really good. We all know gullible people who are delusional but this guy is on a whole different level. I guess, watch it for yourself and try to figure it out. Bobcat Goldthweit is hilarious as the director. This movie was produced by Jimmy Kimmel. It is funny but I did feel kind of bad for the dude. I don't know. Very mixed feelings about the whole thing. And I did laugh a lot and if you love comedies, there's a good chance you will as well.
Would I watch it again? Yes. I feel like I have to just to see if I can figure if this is real or what.
79. Scary Movie (2000) - 77 Points
Chuckles 58, Laughs 24, Belly Laughs 8
Notes: For Friday the 13th, I wanted to watch a "scary movie" and my cousin Jon assured me that I will love the Scary Movie series so I thought I'd check this (first one) out. I liked this movie but I can't say that I loved it. I may have set my expectations too high. It is funny, don't get me wrong and I love the idea of spoofing a horror movie (Scream). I've been told that the sequels are much funnier and better than the original and I am optimistic and happy to see them. That being said, there are funny scenes and non-stop chuckling throughout this Wayans Brothers movie.
Would I watch it again? No.
78. Bullet Train (2022) - 77.5 Points
Chuckles 51, Laughs 25, Belly Laughs 9
Notes: The first time I saw the preview for this movie, I couldn't wait to see it. Unfortunately, they played the trailer so often and for so long prior to the movie being released, that I almost didn't want to see it when it finally hit the theater but I did and I was glad that I did. I saw it twice in the theater and once on video - that's how much I liked it. Bullet Train is an action flick with a lot of comedy, similar to the Thor-Ragnarok movie. This movie stars Brad Pitt and he's perfectly cast as the unlucky hit-man hired to pick up a briefcase on a bullet train full of hitmen/criminals. Fair warning, there is as much graphic violence as there are laughs (a lot). I found the "twins" (Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, hit-men hired to bring the mysterious head of the crime family his son and his briefcase full of money to him in Kyoto) to be extremely funny and likeable. I loved the Thomas the Train references throughout. Also great to see Andrew Koji (Warrior) and Hiroyuki Sanada in this film. It's amazing to me how an action movie can outscore dedicated comedies but.... this movie delivers laughs. I found it very funny.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
77. A Night at the Roxbury (1998) - 78.5 Points
Chuckles 53, Laughs 22, Belly Laughs 10
Notes: I'd seen the SNL spoof of this movie with Jim Carrey but somehow, I'd never gotten around to watching this actual movie itself. This stars Will Farrell and Chris Kattan as two idiot brothers who are trying to make it into the "cool nightclub" to score with girls. The problem is they have a hard time making it in. I LOVE the dance floor scenes, the beepers and I'd totally forgotten about Richard Greico who apparently was still a big deal in 1998.
Would I watch this movie again? Yes.
76. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007) - 78.5 Points
Chuckles 49, Laughs 18, Belly Laughs 12
Notes: This movie seems to be lampooning the Johnny Cash biopic; Walk the Line and doing a great job of it. John C. Reilly is perfectly cast in this Judd Apatow movie. Pam from The Office (Jenna Fisher) never looked better and never was funnier than in this film. There are funny lines and John C. Reilly is actually a good singer.
Would I watch it again? Maybe.
75. Shazam (2019) - 78.5 Points
Chuckles 41, Laughs 19, Belly Laughs 13
Notes: I've now seen this movie 4 or 5 times and still find it very funny. The first time I saw it I was literally in tears laughing. I think it's the funniest super hero movie made and that's saying something considering that the Marvel Universe has incorporated humor into their super hero movies quite regularly and DC rarely does, except for this one (and Justice League is also pretty funny at times) but they go all in for Shazam and it totally works in this film. "Captain Sparkle Fingers" is also fun because he's a teenager.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
74. The Change Up (2011) - 79. Points
Chuckles 48, Laughs 19, Belly Laughs 12
Notes: I'd never heard of this movie until I saw it on Netflix and I saw two of my favorite actors: Justin Bateman and Ryan Reynolds and I had to check it out but didn't think for a second that it would make the top 100 list. That's a shocker, especially considering that this movie is pretty raunchy (to the point where I paused it when my wife walked in when Ryan Reynolds character was "acting" in a scene. The movie features two lifelong friends, Justin Bateman is the responsible one who is an attorney, married with three kids (the opening scene was hard to watch). Ryan Reynolds is boy man who never grew up, is a quitter/loser. The two guys pee in a fountain, wish for each other's lives because it's human nature to think that you want something other than what you have and they get their wish. It was funny to see the actors playing each other's parts, living each other's lives and it has a feel good ending. This movie would be especially appealing to married guys with kids.
Would I watch it again? No, I think once is enough and I'm a little embarrassed that I laughed this much but... I did and you might too if you're not easily offended by adult themes, language, nudity and other things.
73. The Water Boy (1998) - 79.5 Points
Chuckles 33, Laughs 36, Belly Laughs 9
Notes: I'm a big fan of Adam Sandler and this was the first of his movies that I watched and scored. I had seen it once before and remembered it was pretty funny with a couple of quotable lines that you still hear every once in a while. "You can do it" and "Oh no, we suck again!" (in a cajun accent) I laughed a lot more than I'd have thought that I would. Really dumb. Really funny.
Would watch it again? Yes.
72. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) - 81.5 Points
Chuckles 45, Laughs 20, Belly Laughs 13
Notes: I had never heard of this movie before but I saw it on more than one list of top comedies and I reluctantly watched it, preparing to crucify it but... THIS IS A FUNNY MOVIE! A weird, fascinating, funny black and white film. I've never seen a Cary Grant movie before and I really enjoyed it though it did start a little slow for me. This film features funny lines like, "when you make up your mind, you lose your head" and "he wouldn't have died of pneumonia if I hadn't shot him" or "insanity doesn't run in my family. It practically gallops!" Of note is Peter Lorre playing Dr. Einstein. I recognized an animated version of Peter Lorre from the Bugs Bunny's/Looney Toon Cartoons I watched as a kid. Good stuff! I really loved this movie. I think they could have condensed the movie a bit as it's kind of repetitive near the end but it's still worth watching, especially around Halloween.
Would I watch it again? Yes. This was a happy surprise for me.
71. Anchorman (2004) - 82.5 Points
Chuckles 41, Laughs 38, Belly Laughs 8
Notes: Great cast with many, many quotable lines that I have seen on bumper stickers and magnets. I hadn't watched this movie in many years and thoroughly enjoyed it. I originally thought this might be the highest scoring Will Ferrell movie and even though it wasn't, it's very iconic and worth watching. Very funny.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
70. The Hangover (2009) - 83 Points
Chuckles 48, Laughs 32, Belly Laughs 9
Notes: I thought this movie might land in the top 10 and was surprised when I watched and scored it that it fell short of that expectation. Still, it's a very funny movie with laughs throughout. I felt like Ken Jeong stole the show. Truly an all star cast all the way around. Zach Galifianakis was especially stupid and hilarious. Funny premise. It was a cool surprise to see Mike Tyson and his tiger! Maybe Hangover 2 or 3 will score higher.
Would I watch it again? Yes, although I'll see if I change my mind after watching/scoring two sequels. That might be enough for me.
69. Liar Liar (1997) - 84 Points
Chuckles 38, Laughs 20, Belly Laughs 15
Notes: I honestly don't understand how/why for 30 years, Hollywood portrayed kids with the "Cousin Oliver" (Brady Bunch)/Adam Rich (8 is Enough) haircut that NO kids in real life had but here it is again, with Jim Carrey's son (Max). Hopefully this is the last that we've seen of it. Despite the miss on the haircut, Liar Liar is a very funny movie and somehow I'd missed it when it came out. It features Jim Carrey at his absolute best, which is saying a lot. He's so hilarious and animated, he reminds me of a young Jerry Lewis and I mean that as the highest compliment. I was amused to see that Jim Carrey's character used a version of "the claw" as I did with my kids when they were younger. Lying is such a big part of our lives (more often than not, it isn't for malicious reasons) so it's oddly uncomfortable and hilarious to see what would happen if you couldn't tell a lie, even for 24 hours. This is a fun movie and I'd highly recommend it.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
68. Zombieland (2009) - 84 Points
Chuckles 30, Laughs 21, Belly Laughs 16
Notes: You know that you have a really solid list when one of your favorite comedies not only doesn't crack the top 20 but it begins it's life on the chart at #52 and it can only move down from there. For a split second I considered giving it an extra point so that it would move up one spot and be listed higher than Bananas but I have to keep it real and remain honest. The score is the score. Although I don't like or dislike movies about zombies, I do love the juxtaposition with Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg that makes this this an amazingly fun, funny movie and I love the idea of a comedy/horror film. Since this is a zombie movie at it's heart, expect plenty of violence and gore, which isn't necessarily my favorite thing in the world but it makes sense in this context and this is still a fun movie to watch. I love the cameo with Bill Murray. There are great, funny lines throughout. "Well, I've never been good with farewells so... That'll do pig!"
Would I watch it again? Yes. This is the 3rd or 4th time I've seen it and I'm sure that I'll see it again.
67. The Pink Panther (2006) - 84.5 Points
Chuckles 59, Laughs 19, Belly Laughs 12
Notes: This Pink Panther stars Steve Martin, who may not be everyone's first choice or favorite in this role (RIP Peter Sellers) but honestly, this movie was much funnier than I expected, even if the critics hated it. I was surprised to see Jason Stratham and Beyonce ("Stop browbeating her! Can't you see she's sexy?") in this movie. I laughed really hard when Steve Martin was taking voice coaching lessons and struggled to say, "I would like to buy a hamburger." I mean, for that scene alone the movie was worth it for me but there were laughs throughout. I didn't expect this movie to score this many points and I kind of wish it didn't because it probably makes me look like a weirdo for laughing this much but I have to be honest - I chuckled and laughed throughout. There are 11 Pink Panther movies and of the 3 that I've watched so far (The Pink Panther-1963 and A Shot in the Dark-1964), this scored the highest but I will watch and score The Return of the Pink Panther, The Pink Panther Strikes Again and Revenge of the Pink Panther and see which is indeed the funniest.
Would I watch it again? I might be the only person in the world to say yes but honestly, I would.
66. Bananas (1971) - 84.5 Points
Chuckles 53, Laughs 28, Belly Laughs 10
Notes: I had never seen this movie before. After watching Annie Hall, I was pretty nervous about watching another Woody Allen film and honestly, I'm glad that I did. This movie is very funny. I was surprised to see Howard Cosell in this movie with scenes at the beginning and the end were awesome. Also surprised to see a very young Sylvester Stallone in the subway scene. Lots of funny lines. "Would you like a coffee or something or if you're hungry, maybe I can open a can of ribs if you want."
Would I watch it again? Yes.
65. History of the World- Pt. 1 (1981) - 84.5 Points
Chuckles 65, Laughs 28, Belly Laughs 8
Notes: This is Mel Brooks at his finest in my opinion. Lots of jokes, gags and general silliness. Mel makes "light" of The horrific Spanish Inquisition which persecuted and tortured his people (both Jews and Muslims) in an attempt to convert them to Christianity, presenting it as a hilarious musical number (I guess you could laugh or cry - might as well laugh) and the, "It's good to be the King" theme throughout the French Revolution showcases the incredible sense of humor that made Mel Brooks a legend. It is second in points only to Young Frankenstein.
Would I watch it again? Probably.
64. Duck Soup (1933) - 84.5 Points
Chuckles 75, Laughs 35, Belly Laughs 4
Notes: The Marx Brothers have been comedy favorites of mine forever. Incredible characters and timing, fast and slick jokes, one-liners flying out of their mouths at such an incredible rate, you can barely keep up. Despite being made in 1933, the statement it makes about politics and the state of our current world is uncanny. It simply stands the test of time. If you've never seen the Marx Brothers before, you should check out this one. If only a few more of the chuckles and laughs were BIG (belly) laughs, this would be a top 10 movie. It's really, really funny!
Would I watch it again? Yes.
63. Monty Python & the Holy Grail (1975) - 85 Points
Chuckles 80, Laughs 30, Belly Laughs 7
Notes: British Humor IS funny and this film is proof. There's a reason this is such an iconic movie with so many quotable lines. It's absurd. It's silly. It's stupid. It's clever. It's funny. Even the opening credits with the subtitles about the moose are hilarious! I've seen this movie 3x and it's still very funny, each time I watch it, I see one minor detail that I missed the last time.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
62. Meet the Fockers (2004) - 85.5 Points
Chuckles 47, Laughs 17, Belly Laughs 15
Notes: This movie is the sequel to Meet The Parents. In the first movie, Gaylord (played by Ben Stiller)met Pam's parents including the uptight, ex-CIA father (Jack) played by Roberto De Niro. Now her parents are taking a trip to meet Gaylord's parents before the wedding. His father is played by Dustin Hoffman and mother played by Barbara Streisand, who are loveable, sexual hippies (the exact opposite of Jack). It's a funny premise and there are laughs throughout. Dustin Hoffman is great in everything he does and I felt especially impressed with Barbara Streisand who really owned this role. It was also a fun surprise to see Owen Wilson again, who now speaks Hebrew and plays the pan flute, because, of course he does! Although it didn't score quite as many points as the original, it was very close. I always get a bit "irked" when a movie scores slightly higher than Duck Soup because it's been one of my favorite movies of all time but I learned recently that Meet the Fockers is my daughter's best friend's (hi Parmiss!) favorite movie of all time so I guess that makes me feel a little better and honestly, it earned this score as it's genuinely that funny!
Would I watch it again? Probably.
61. 40-Year Old Virgin (2005) - 87.5 Points
Chuckles 51, Laughs 32, Belly Laughs 10
Notes: This is a sexually charged movie that is not for kids (pay attention to the "R" rating). I'm actually surprised (and a little disappointed personally) that this movie scored more points than Duck Soup but it had more belly laughs, which made the difference and I have to be true to the data and the point system. Steve Carell, Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd are funny individually and it's fun to see them all together in this film. Steve Carell's love interest is Catherine Keener who was also the object of desire for John Cusack in the 1999 film, Being John Malkovich. My favorite scene is at the end when Steve Carell sings and Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd are dancing.
Would I watch it again? No.
60. Wayne's World (1992) - 87.5 Points
Chuckles 103, Laughs 24, Belly Laughs 4
Notes: As I began watching this movie, I became concerned that the "funny parts" weren't making me laugh the same way they had the first time I'd watched the movie in 1992. Still, there were so many hilarious scenes that I'd completely forgotten about (i.e. Foxy Lady) that made this truly enjoyable again. At least half of my chuckles this time around would have been actual laughs and many of the laughs were belly laughs the first time I watched it but still, this movie holds up and is very funny. So many pop culture "bits" originated in this movie: the use of "as if" was 3 years ahead of Clueless, "not" was years ahead of Borat, "that's what she said," many years before Michael Scott and The Office. This film features so many funny lines like, "If she were President, she's be Baberaham Lincoln" or "if Benjamin were an ice cream flavor, he's be pralines and dick!" People still use the "we're not worthy" that pays homage to this movie. Dana Carvey and Mike Myers are incredibly funny, Tia Carrere is super hot and it's quite the coincidence that the movie I just reviewed prior (Tommy Boy) also featured Rob Lowe as the antagonist and had Chris Farley in them (much smaller role here).
Would I watch it again? Yes
59. The Great Dictator (1940) - 90 Points
Chuckles 52, Laughs 31, Belly Laughs 11
Notes: Charlie Chaplin made silent films long after "talkies" were invented and popularized. This is the first film that features all characters (including himself) in speaking roles and it's a very good, very funny film. This was made and released right as WWII started and the film is lampooning both Hitler and Mussolini (interesting that Hitler adopted the "toothbrush" moustache after Chaplin had already made it famous). Although a serious subject, Chaplin paints the pain of the Jews with a comedic paintbrush as did Mel Brooks in many of his films. Chaplin delivers a world class speech that if we all listened and adhered to, would truly make the world a much better place for all of us. It's a message of hope. There's no way that he could have known the world would see in the 5 years following the release of this film. Still, this is a comedy and a great one at that. It's also interesting to see a film that was so topical with the times. I had no idea the he played piano (was everyone at this time talented musically?). Also, since I'd never seen him speak, I'd assumed he was an American but he was British and had the British accent to prove it.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
58. Hot Shots (1991) - 90.5 Points
Chuckles 81, Laughs 26, Belly Laughs 8
Notes: Charlie Sheen stars in this Top Gun spoof which features Jon Cryer (the Duckie - Pretty in Pink) and Cary Elwys (The Princess Bride), Jeff Bridges and Valeria Golino. Somehow I watched Part II before I saw Part I in the Hot Shots series but it doesn't really matter. They're both silly, ridiculous and hilarious much in the style of comedy that Airplane made famous. This movie almost made top 5 in the # of chuckles (81) but there are laughs and belly laughs as well.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
57. Game Night (2018) - 90.5 Points
Chuckles 51, Laughs 32, Belly Laughs 11
Notes: As I was inputting the score on the website, I was really shocked that this movie has the exact same number of chuckles and laughs as 40-Year Old Virgin but scored one more big, belly laugh to boost the score. This movie should not be confused with Date Night by Tina Fey, though both have similarities and are really funny. This is the first comedy that I've watched/scored with Jason Bateman, who I like very much as an actor. At first I thought his co-star was Jennifer Gardner. Holy smokes! When she has brown hair, Rachel McAdams looks like her sister. Anyway, I REALLY enjoyed this movie. There were some unexpected twists and turns and laughs from beginning to end. I had seen it once before when it first came out.
Would I watch it again? Yes. Very funny!
56. Groundhog Day (1993) - 90.5 Points
Chuckles 35, Laughs 40, Belly Laughs 11
Notes: This is one of my favorite movies, not just because it's funny but it's just enjoyable to watch. I had watched/scored a number of straight up comedies and at the end, this one felt different and then it dawned on me that this is a "rom-com" and a darn good one. Bill Murray is awesome and Andie MacDowell is gorgeous. The acting is amazing as they repeat the same lines over and over with with such zest! I wish I could get that darn song out of my head (the Pennsylvania Polka) song out of my head from the movie... Highly recommend this one. Who doesn't like Bill Murray? Would I watch it again? Yes. This could be one of those movies that you watch every 5 years because it's that entertaining.
55. Zoolander (2001) - 91 Points
Chuckles 56, Laughs 42, Belly Laughs 7
Notes: Man, I love Ben Stiller and couldn't wait to watch this one again since it had been many years since I'd seen it last. I've seen it 3 or 4 times total. Owen Wilson really steals the show and Will Ferrell is also is great! The first time I saw it, I thought his romantic lead was Marsha Brady all grown up. Wait... was it? Actually, Christine Taylor did play Marsha in two Brady movies in the 90's. If you've never seen this movie - you are missing out. I used to work with a guy that reminded me of Derek Zoolander in many, many ways except he was not quite as ridiculously good looking. Great soundtrack! Would I watch it again? Yes. Love it!
54. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) - 91.5 Points
Chuckles 79, Laughs 28, Belly Laughs 8
Notes: This is one of the funniest Christmas movies ever made (in my humble opinion) and it scored more laughs than the majority of comedies that I've watched to this point. Opey (Ron Howard) really knows how to direct winning movies. Jim Carrey brings the Grinch to live with such zest. He's literally the only one that could have pulled it off. He has an uncanny ability to communicate his visual comedy while wearing a mask/prostetic, Truly remarkable. Whether it's the Holiday Season or not, if you haven't seen this movie, you should. It's literally my youngest daughter's favorite Christmas movie with great performances by Taylor Momsen (Cindy Lou Who) and Christine Baranski (Martha May Whovier) but let's be honest, this is the Jim Carrey Show. One of my favorite performances - the guy was just on fire.
Would I watch it again? Yes
53. Meet the Parents (2000) - 91.5 Points
Chuckles 49, Laughs 25, Belly Laughs 14
Notes: First I had two Tiny Fey movies with exactly the same number of points and I couldn't believe it when I added it up but now I have two Ben Stiller movies with almost exactly the same number of points. It's a joy to watch two comic superstars who are consistently hilarious. Meet the Parents also pairs Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson again, this time to a lesser degree than Zoolander. Robert De Niro is amazing in this film and creates such incredibly funny, awkward and uncomfortable moments as Ben Stiller tries his best to win him over only to have everything turn out wrong. Greg's prayer at the table is so hilarious.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
52. Date Night (2010) - 91.5 Points
Chuckles 49, Laughs 31, Belly Laughs 12
Notes: I was in absolute shock when I added up the points and saw that there are two Tina Fey movies with exactly the same number of points. Since Baby Mama had more Belly Laughs, I'll give it the higher ranking but what are the chances? Well, Tina Fey is consistently hilarious. Loved this movie because the comedy is in the reality and depiction of married life featured especially in the beginning of the film. Wow! So much to love.... Sexy Robot dancing, huge all star cast with Tiny Fey, Steve Carrell, Markey Mark, James Franco, Kristen Wiig, Gal Gadot, Mila Kunis, Mark Ruffalo, Common, Ray Liotta... and more. Favorite line: Steve Carrell to Markey Mark. "Even though your pecs make me want to kill myself and your girlfriend is so hot it's like looking through a shimmering jet engine, I know.... I believe that there is a real person in there who knows what I'm going through right now so please, let us in and for the f*cking love of God, please put on your shirt!"
Would I watch it again? Yes.
51. Baby Mama (2008) - 91.5 Points
Chuckles 47, Laughs 17, Belly Laughs 17
Notes: I'd never seen this movie but I expected it to be good as I'm a big fan of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. I didn't realize Steve Martin was in it and he was absolutely hysterical. There are a lot of laughs and good percentage of those laughs are big, belly shaking laughs (the very best kind)! So many iconic lines. "He never asked me to be his wife but he never didn't ask me not to be his wife." "At first I was a little worried about a witch carrying my baby but I came around to the idea or.. she put a spell on me. Did you put a spell on me, Ashley?" Kudo's to Tiny Fey - just one of my favorite comedians and writers.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
50. Bowfinger (1999) - 92 Points
Chuckles 44, Laughs 19, Belly Laughs 17
Notes: I was surprised this movie wasn't on any of the "experts" top comedy lists. Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy in a film with the script written by Steve Martin and features Heather Graham? I had seen it many years ago and I didn't expect it to score this high but when Eddie Murphy plays his own, nerdy brother, man, I just couldn't stop laughing! His appearance, his body language, his voice, demeanor, it's actually impressive acting and absolutely hilarious. THIS IS THE FUNNIEST MOVIE THAT MOST PEOPLE HAVE NEVER SEEN OR HEARD OF and culprit may be the title of the movie. What is "Bowfinger?" What does it mean? Despite having a name that is completely forgettable, this is a really amazing movie and Eddy Murphy SLAYS in this movie!!!
Would I watch it again? Yes.
49. Best in Show (2000) - 93 Points
Chuckles 50, Laughs 26, Belly Laughs 14
Notes: Another movie that I'd never seen before and I had no idea what to expect. This movie is weird, quirky and humorous. I found a good mix of chuckles, laughs and big belly laughs in this film. I found Fred Willard, Eugene Levy, Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, Michael Hitchcock and Jane Lynch especially funny. "We are so lucky. We are so lucky to have been raised amongst catalogs." - Meg Swan. What does it mean? Watch the movie.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
48. Caddy Shack (1980) - 93.5 Points
Chuckles 81, Laughs 26, Belly Laughs 9
Notes: Ahoy Polloi! I was looking forward to watching/scoring this movie featuring Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield, three of my favorite comedians in the 80's. This iconic movie is funny but it didn't score as high as I thought it would. There are iconic lines and jokes a-plenty. If only a dozen of those 81 chuckles would have made me laugh a little harder, this movie would be near the top of the list. It features one of the better soundtracks for a comedy.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
47. Modern Times (1936) - 94.5 Points
Chuckles 59, Laughs 20, Belly Laughs 15
Notes: This is a fascinating film because this is a "near" silent film, not because "talkies" weren't invented yet (they were) but by Charlie Chaplin's design/desire. There are no spoken lines except you can hear a radio talking in the background and twice, the CEO of the company that Charlie Chaplin works for appears on video and talks to the employees but other than that, this is a traditional silent film with no other spoken lines though Charlie Chaplin sings a song in Italian (beautifully) near the end of the film. This is the first time that Charlie Chaplin's voice was ever heard in a motion picture and the very last of his films featuring the "tramp" character. Charlie Chaplin's prowess on roller skates is undeniable in the night watchman scene in the department store. I was surprised to see "nose powder" (cocaine) in a jail scene. At this time (the 1930's) drug references were prohibited. This is a rare movie that I'd seen on many "experts" lists that I we can agree, definitely belongs on all "best of all time" lists. I love all of his movies but if you're going to watch one Charlie Chaplin movie, let this be the one. Bravo!
Would I watch it again? Absolutely!
46. The Wedding Singer (1998) - 96.5 Points
Chuckles 59, Laughs 25, Belly Laughs 14
Notes: Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have such wonderful chemistry and appear in several movies together and this may be my favorite. This film is set in the 1980's and features the best soundtrack of all time in my opinion. It's cute, it's endearing and it's truly funny. If you haven't seen it, you're missing out. I'm a fan of Adam Sandler and this is one of his best. Steve Buscemi is hilarious and it is fun to see Billy Idol. Drew Barrymore is just so stinkin' cute in this movie.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
45. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) - 97.5 Points
Chuckles 55, Laughs 34, Belly Laughs 12
Notes: This movie was funny and honestly, I feel like Ben Stiller's character is the twin brother to Derek Zoolander, which totally works for him and makes the movie very enjoyable (assuming you like Zoolander). I'm honestly a little shocked that it scored more points than Zoolander because, between the two, I probably like Zoolander more but the score is the score. For the record, Zoolander actually did score more total laughs (105) than Dodgeball (101) but the Belly Laughs were the big difference and Dodgeball earned this ranking. This movie also stars Vince Vahn.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
44. Madagascar (2005) - 99 Points
Chuckles 44, Laughs 26, Belly Laughs 17
Notes: I saw this movie years ago and remember it being very funny. I looked on every streaming service and it was not available, not even on Prime for rental so I literally ordered a dvd from eBay and had it shipped to me the old fashioned way, hoping that all of this was going to be worth it, that I wasn't wasting my time or money on a movie that wouldn't make it on the top 100. Whew! This animated (Dream Works) comedy film definitely delivered laughs. This is a very funny movie that also features Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Sasha Baron Cohen (as King Julian), David Schwimmer and Tom McGrath. Although the movie main characters are the lion, the hippo, the zebra and giraffe, I felt that the penguins, the chimps, the lemurs (and the giraffe) really stole the show and supplied most of the laughs for me. This is a very funny movie for kids of all ages (including "adults").
Would I watch it again? Well, I better since I now own the dvd. Yes.
43. The Survivors (1983) - 99.5 Points
Chuckles 59, Laughs 18, Belly Laughs 16
Notes: I've apparently seen this movie so many times that I know all the lines but it had been so long that I'd seen it that I still found it extremely funny. This movies is a super off the radar, underrated gem that isn't on any "experts" list. It stars Robin Williams and Walter Matthau. A couple of interesting things. John Goodman is not overweight in this movie (wasn't sure it was him at first) and Walter Matthau's character has a 16 year old daughter (he looks to be in his mid 60's), which is possible I guess but weird. This movie is hilarious and starts with Robin Williams getting fired from his job by a parrot. I could easily rattle off 30 hilarious lines/quotes from the movie. Really funny script!
Would I watch it again? Yes, I would.
42. Booksmart (2019) - 101.5 Points
Chuckles 53, Laughs 33, Belly Laughs 14
Notes: This comedy features two high school girls on the brink of graduation that "stuck to the books" and focused on getting into a good college only to learn that their classmates that didn't try as hard or were not as focused also got into great schools so they are on a mission to show that they're also fun and know how to party on the eve of graduation. The movie wouldn't score this high without being very funny. I felt like it was unrealistic that the rich kid was not popular. I've never seen a rich kid that wasn't popular and growing up I moved a lot and attended many different schools. Other than that, this is a very entertaining movie but is rated R for a reason. Lots of funny lines and funny characters but Billie Lourd as Gigi stole the show for me. This movie stars Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein, Jessica Williams, Jason Sudeikis, Lisa Kudrow.
Would I watch it again? I've seen it twice in 3 years. Yes.
41. Being John Malkovich (1999) - 102 Points
Chuckles: 42, Laughs 27, Belly Laughs 17
Notes: This film blew my mind the first time I saw it! Such an original movie, truly unlike anything I've ever seen. I love John Cusack and it was fun to see him in a role like this. I totally didn't recognize Cameron Diaz at all. John Malkovich must have an incredible sense of humor. This movie has the distinction of giving me the most uproarious, intense laugh (to the point where I have tears in my eyes) of any movie that I may have ever seen!!! This is a weird but funny movie. Very dark.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
40. Wedding Crashers (2005) - 102.5 Points
Chuckles 45, Laughs 41, Belly Laughs 13
Notes: This movie has an all star cast but the two leads are the remarkably funny Owen Wilson and the, I-haven't-seen-you-in-so-long-I-almost-forgot-your-name; Vince Vahn. I especially loved Bradly Cooper's scenes as a young adult. Isla Fisher is so hilarious. I've only seen this movie twice and it's so inappropriate. Keir O'Donnell steals the scenes he appears in. It scored very high score because of the above average number of belly laughs.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
39. Masterminds (2016) - 104 Points
Chuckles 50, Laughs 25, Belly Laughs 18
Notes: I watched this movie before and thought it was very funny but didn't expect it to score over 100 points. It literally scored 27 points in the first 6 minutes. I mean, Zach Galifianakis' hair... WOW! Hilarious!!! Pair him with the always hilarious Kristin Wiig, add Owen Wilson, Kate McKinnon, Jason Sudeikis and Leslie Jones in a film directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), it's just the perfect storm of funny! The wedding pictures with Zack and Kate... ROFL! Hilarious lines all over the place.
"I look like if Jesus and a cat had a baby - which is a nice thought. I don't know why you wouldn't want a half Jesus, half cat around."
"You farted into my butthole. It's like a fart transplant!"
"They're saying that we're dumber than a suitcase full of buttholes."
Would I watch it again? Yes.
38. Aladdin (1992) - 104.5 Points
Chuckles 61, Laughs 29, Belly Laughs 15
Notes: I may catch a lot of flak for saying this but this is arguably Robin William's (RIP) funniest role in any movie he ever did (as the Genie of the lamp). In fact, I'll say it is without a doubt. Because this is an animated movie without tethers to the physical limits of our world, he's an uncontrollable force, a nuclear bomb of hilarity. Throw in Gilbert Gottfried (RIP) as Lago, the parrot and a monkey named Abu and you have a comedy masterpiece that I think is probably overlooked because it's "a Disney cartoon from the 90's." I'd strongly recommend watching it before you simply discount it. The animation is wonderfully funny, the script is hilarious, the songs are amazing, the casting is perfect. This is truly one of my favorite Disney movies and without a doubt, one of the absolute funniest. The "never had a friend like me" song/scene had me in tears (laughing) the first time I saw it and it still made me laugh out loud watching it again. I'd kind of forgotten about this gem and didn't even have it on my list initially, but I'm so glad I watched it again after all these years. Also, there's a great message in this movie, to "Be Yourself." I remember this movie being funny having watched it a few times, years ago but had no idea it would score this high.
Would I watch it again? Yes. It's a absolute delight.
37. Year One (2009) - 105 Points
Chuckles 56, Laughs 27, Belly Laughs 17
Notes: What do you get with hit comedy director Harold Ramis (Stripes, Ghostbusters, Caddy Shack, Animal House), producer Judd Apatow (Office Space, Knocked Up, 40 Year old Virgin) and co-stars Michael Cera and Jack Black? A very funny movie that nobody has ever heard of and doesn't appear on anyone's top 100 comedy list, ever (before mine)! I loved the juxtoposition of Jack Black's and Michael Cera's vastly different comedy styles totally worked. I'm big fans of both actors and I laughed alot. Since I hadn't heard of this movie before, I didn't expect a lot and was so shocked to see that it ranked this high that I added up the points 3 times. Maybe I was in the mood to laugh, I don't know but this movie was a wonderful surprise for me. I don't know that I loved it move than several of the movies it catapulted above on my list (ranked lower) but it's definitely worth checking out (and totally earned every point).
Would I watch it again? Yes.
36. The Lego Movie (2014) - 105.5 Points
Chuckles, 39, Laughs 32, Belly Laughs 19
Notes: Many of us grew up playing with Legos but honestly, when I saw Lego made a movie several years ago, it seemed like a cute movie for kids and I had zero interest in watching it. I had no idea what I was missing. An all star cast featuring Chris Prat, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and Will Ferrell make this movie fun and laugh out loud funny. It is a funny, cute movie for kids (and adults) and Batman steals the show.
Would I watch it again? Maybe. I've seen it twice and that is likely enough. It's really entertaining but Lego Batman is next level (in my opinion).
35. Between 2 Ferns - The Movie (2019) - 105.5 Points
Chuckles 55, Laughs 39, Belly Laughs 13
Notes: This movie is awkward, stupid, flimsy, weird and incredibly funny. I love the series but had no idea this film would score so high. It scored 30 points before the movie officially began with the horribly uncomfortable and awkward interview with Matthew McConaughey. There's just something wonderfully awesome about seeing a talk show host insult celebrities instead of fawning over them and it also shows that the celebrities (that appear on the series and in this movie) are great sports to endure the slams by Zack Galifianakis aka: Chad Farthouse.
Would I Watch it again? Yes.
34. Stepbrothers (2008) - 105.5 Points
Chuckles 75, Laughs 32, Belly Laughs 12
Notes: I was so surprised that this movie scored more laughs than Anchorman but it did. It also had a dozen belly laughs which boosted the score dramatically. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are a dynamic duo and it totally works in this very funny movie. This is an absolutely stupid and hilarious movie.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
33. Horrible Bosses (2011) - 107 Points
Chuckles 54, Laughs 26, Belly Laughs 18
Notes: When I added up the points and look at the movies that Horrible Bosses outscored, I was really surprised (did the match twice) but this is a very funny movie. Jason Bateman, Jason Sudekis and Charlie Day are a very funny trio of friends. The "horrible bosses" played by Jennifer Anniston, Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell (I didn't recognize at all) were well played and you definitely rooted against them (though honestly, I hated Kevin and Colin much more than Jennifer because I found her funny and the other two were just dicks). The scene where Charlie Day stabs Kevin Spacey with the EpiPen was the funniest for me. Jamie Foxx was great but I wish he had a bigger part. One of the funniest lines: Jason Bateman being interviewed by the police, trying to explain why he was racing away from the crime scene.
"You were drag racing?" Yes. "In a Prius?" I don't win a lot.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
32. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) - 107.5 Points
Chuckles 29, Laughs 30, Belly Laughs 21
Notes: This remake of the original 1995 movie is a wonderful adventure-comedy. Although it may not have made me laugh or chuckle as many times (in total) as Stepbrothers, the laughs were bigger and more significant with 21 Belly Laughs, boosting the score, much of that because of Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Dwayne Johnson. What I love about this movie is that the personality of the person playing the game kept shining through the actual in-game characters so The Rock acts like a "scared nerd" and Jack Black acts like the "hot girl" playing his character, etc... This is a really great reimagination of the original movie with Robin Williams, which I will watch and score. Karen Gillan got in amazing shape for this role (I was a fan of hers from her stint on Dr. Who) and I honestly couldn't take my eyes off her abs in every scene she was in. There were many funny scenes but for me, maybe the funniest was when her character (being played by a shy, nerdy girl) was trying to flirt with the guards to distract the and she began "dance-fighting!" This is a feel-good comedy. Would I watch it again? Yes.
31. Young Frankenstein (1974) - 108 Points
Chuckles 46, Laughs 28, Belly Laughs 19
Notes: This is my favorite Mel Brooks movie of all time. I've seen it several times over the years and it's funny and wonderful every time. It was co-written by Gene Wilder, which is why it's slightly different than the other Mel Brook's movies. I love the scene with the blind man and also the performance (puttin' on the ritz). Bravo! Brilliantly acted by Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle and Teri Garr. I expected this movie to score a ton of points and it didn't disappoint.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
30. Free Guy (2021) - 108 Points
Chuckles 34, Laughs 34, Belly Laughs 19
Notes: I was excited about this movie when I saw the original trailer in the theatre and was thrilled to finally see it on the big screen. I've literally seen it 6x in the past year and absolutely love it every time. Ryan Reynold's character (Guy/Blue Shirt Guy) reminds me of Will Ferrell's character (Buddy) in Elf or Emmet in The Lego Movie. Mix in some Scott Pilgrim and maybe a little Ground Hog's Day and you have Free Guy! I love all those characters and movies and this movie does not disappoint. It's a Comedy in a Video Game with some Rom Com. Very enjoyable. One of my newer favorites!
Would I watch it again? Absolutely! I could watch it again tomorrow.
29. Scary Movie 3.5 (2003) - 109 Points
Chuckles 66, Laughs 31, Belly Laughs 15
Notes: I enjoyed Scary Movie 3 (3.5) so much more than the first two installments. It is extremely funny. The third Scary Movie has a totally different feel than 1 and 2 and it feels much more like Airplane and Naked Gun, which makes sense since it was directed by David Zucker who directed those movies and this one (Keenen Ivory Wayans directed the first two Scary Movies). I found it super fun to see Charlie Sheen, Leslie Nielson, Anthony Anderson and Kevin Hart in this movie. Only Anna Faris and Regina Hall carry over from the first two installments. This is a very funny parody movie that is spoofing Signs, The Ring and The Matrix.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
28. Raising Arizona (1987) - 109.5 Points
Chuckles 53. Laughs 35, Belly Laughs 16
Notes: This is one of the few movies that I thought would score high and it actually came through and met my expectations. It's long been a favorite of mine, having seen it several times over the years. I love Nicholas Cage's narration, his hair, the camera angles. This film is perfectly written and acted with impeccable attention to detail. The amazing thing is that there's not a "big name" comedian to carry the film although the film features Nick Cage, Holly Hunter and John Goodman, who are "big name actors." It's just one of the wildest, funniest movies ever made, plain and simple.
Would I watch it again? Yes!
27. Tommy Boy (1995) - 111.5 Points
Chuckles 61, Laughs 33, Belly Laughs 16
Notes: I've been a fan of Chris Farley since I first saw him on SNL and I've watched all of his movies. I've always been curious about which movies was the funniest and now, I have proof that this one is the funniest for me. It really made me laugh and scored even more points that I'd have predicted. This is another "odd couple" movie with David Spade and Chris Farley, traveling across country trying to save Tommy Boy's family company. Chris Farley also plays the same, lovable, oafish, not-so-smart character that is incredibly endearing. Though it seems similar to Black Sheep, this movie seems to be better written, better acted and just better all the way around. Although it ranks higher than other comedies that I might like as much or more, the score doesn't lie. It's an extremely funny movie and earned this place on the Top 100 comedies of all time.
Would I watch it again? Yes!
26. Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) - 112.5 Points
Chuckles 61, Laughs 39, Belly Laughs 14
Notes: I'm a huge fan of both Steve Martin and John Candy and they are the prefect "odd couple" and I love the juxtaposition of these two personalities. This is a beautiful John Hughes movie and is perfect to watch around Thanksgiving every year. It's a feel-good movie that is very, very funny with many quotable lines! I never tire of this timeless comedy which is funny and surprisingly touching at the end! The was the first movie I ever scored for this website and I believe that I actually failed to mark down each chuckle, laugh or belly laugh and since I watched and scored it twice, I'm using the average score, which I believe to be more accurate now that I have a lot more experience with pen in hand watching these comedies.
Would I watch it again? Yes, I plan to watch it every Thanksgiving to properly kick off the holiday season!
25. Hot Shots Part Deux (1993) - 116.5 Points
Chuckles 77, Laughs 39, Belly Laughs 13
Notes: It it the "best" movie? Is it a good movie? That's a matter of opinion but this movie delivers lots of laughs the same way that Airplane and Naked Gun do; with silly, stupid and hilarious lines. I bought this DVD years ago and never unwrapped it and now I saw it streaming on HBO Max and watched it (I think I eventually just sold it at a yard sale unopened, at a loss). Go figure! This movie features a very buff Charlie Sheen with cameos with Martin Sheen and Bob Villa. Is that the same Colonel from Rambo? Is that the same Colonel from Rambo? Yes it is, which is very fitting as Charlie Sheen plays a Ramboesque character who sets out to rescue the rescue team who was captured trying to rescue American POW's from Desert Storm. This movie also features the very funny Lloyd Bridges and Valeria Golino who delivers hilarious lines without blinking her mesmerizing eyes. Loved the nod to American Gladiators near the end of the film. I didn't realize there was a Hot Shots (part 1). I guess I'll need to add that to the list since this one scored so many points.
Would I watch it again? Maybe.
24. Airplane! (1980) - 117 Points
Chuckles 68, Laughs 50, Belly Laughs 11
Notes: Yes, there is an actual exclamation point in the name (that's not just me being excited about the movie - which I was when I watched it). I feel like this movie created a whole new comedy genre. Every line is quotable. Big name stars. Big laughs and lots of chuckles. The comedy is relentless from beginning to end. Still extremely funny. So much to love! Would I watch it again? Yes.
23. Borat (2006) - 117.5 Points
Chuckles 53, Laughs 34, Belly Laughs 19
Notes: I was amused that there were similarities to the movie; Elf when Borat came to NYC, very naïve and found the people a bit... unwelcoming but that's where the similarities between the two movies end. This movie is 100% cringe-worthy with some of the most uncomfortable, awkward scenes ever witnessed on the big screen. It's both extremely inappropriate and extremely funny. I can't get the image out of my head of him wresting the older, fat guy in the hotel (both nude). I feel like I need to take a shower after watching this movie. How Sasha never breaks character is amazing and it's a wonder he wasn't shot or beat up during filming. Fun fact: Sasha Baron Cohen is Jewish for those that have watched the movie and found it anti-Semitic.
Would I watch it again? Probably. I've seen it 2 or 3x now and that may be enough to last a lifetime but likely, Yes.
22. What about Bob (1991) - 118 Points
Chuckles 52, Laughs 35, Belly Laughs 19
Notes: I hadn't watched this in over a decade and had forgotten how amazing Bill Murray is opposite Richard Dreyfuss, who is cast perfectly. It scored very high because of the 19 hearty/belly laughs. It starts a little slow but man when it hits it's stride, it's hysterical! It's one of the more obscure Bill Murray movies possibly but it shouldn't be because it is truly laugh out loud funny.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
21. Deadpool (2016) - 118.5 Points
Chuckles 61, Laughs 40, Belly Laughs 14
Notes: This movie is extremely violent, extremely gory, extremely funny and it is not for kids as it is quite sexual/raunchy in addition to the gore and violence. Pay attention to the R-Rating. That being said, this is really the first super hero that kills bad guys, which is oddly refreshing in some ways. It feels a little odd that it ranked higher than Airplane and Borat but it's that funny. If you're an adult that isn't easily offended, that loves super hero movies and comedies - you'll love this one! Ryan Reynolds kills (punt intended, as one of my former colleagues like to mistakenly say)!
Would I watch it again? Yes.
20. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013) - 119.5 Points
Chuckles 89, Laughs 33, Belly Laughs 14
Notes: This is one of the rare instances when the sequel scored more points than the original. Will Ferrell and gang are absolutely hilarious in this movie that is set in New York. The addition of a love interest for Steve Carrell played by the incredible Kristin Wiig was genius! "This is the nicest soda machine anyone's ever taken me to!" Love the scene where Ron Burgundy is skating while playing flute. "What in the name of Dan Isle?" The Canadian News Crew (SORRY!) is nothing short of amazing. If you liked the original Anchorman, there is a good chance you might find the sequel even funnier, like I did.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
19. Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) - 120.5 Points
Chuckles 61, Laughs 25, Belly Laughs 21
Notes: I'd never heard of this movie but saw it on Prime and since it was directed by John Landis and featured David Zucker who would go on to direct Airplane, Naked Gun and two of the Scary Movies (3.5 and 4), I decided to give it a chance. With no expectations, I found myself laughing my butt off within from the very beginning. Kentucky Fried Movie is a series of skits lampooning the news, other movies and TV shows popular at the time the film was released. My favorites of which were Enter The Dragon spoof and the coming attractions movie called "Cleopatra Schwartz." Be forewarned that this movie is rated R for a reason as it features nudity, violence and adult language. I'm not sure why I'd never heard of this movie before but it's hilarious and racked up a huge score.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
18. Talladega Nights (2006) - 122 Points
Chuckles 72, Laughs 50, Belly Laughs 12
Notes: Well... this is THE HIGHEST RATED Will Ferrell movie I watched/scored (tied with Elf). I didn't expect that and was shocked when I totaled the points. The scenes with the family giving grace (praying to Baby Jesus) before they eat are just hysterical. John C. Reilly is really funny. I had forgotten that Sacha Baron Cohen was in this and he was a riot as well. Love the gag reel at the end of the movie.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
17. Elf (2003) - 122 Points
Chuckles 72, Laughs 38, Belly Laughs 16
Notes: Will Farrell is perfectly cast as Buddy the Elf. He plays the elf with such innocence, it's truly fun and amazing to witness. You could watch it any time of year and it would be awesome but I watch it every year at Christmas with my family. It's one of the few movies that I look forward to watching again and again, which is rare (for me) for a comedy. This is probably my favorite Christmas movie of all time, certainly my favorite Christmas comedy.
Would I watch it again? Yes! Every year without fail!
16. No Time for Sergeants (1958) - 124 Points
Chuckles 54, Laughs 34, Belly Laughs 21
Notes: This movie is the best kept secret in comedy films and appears on almost no top lists but it is extremely funny. It stars Andy Griffith (before the Andy Griffith TV series). Though it starts a little slow (to the point where I nearly stopped watching) and the ending is lacking, this movie provides lots of laughs in-between and scored high with a large number of hearty, belly laughs. The innocence and naivete of Andy Griffith's character appeals to me in the same way Will Ferrell does in the movie, Elf and Ryan Reynolds does in the movie, Free Guy.
Would I watch it again? Maybe a few years down the road. It's a sweet, good-natured comedy.
15. Ralph Breaks The Internet (2018) - 126.5 Points
Chuckles 43, Laughs 48, Belly Laughs 19
Notes: Disney poured all their firepower into this animated gem and they absolutely knocked it out of the park! I loved the first Wreck-it Ralph movie but this one is hilarious because of all the pop cultural references and the scenes with the Disney Princesses almost had me crying with laughter! Who says you adults can't enjoy animated films? I mean, we grew up with cartoons. We're not supposed to watch them now because we are older? Pish posh! This film is funny and touching with important life lessons thrown in for good measure. This is a very rare example of a sequel scoring much higher (almost twice as many laughs and points scored) than the original. This gem of an animated movie stars John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Gal Gadot, Taraji P. Henson, Jack McBrayer.
Would I watch it again? Definitely!
14. Shrek (2001) - 127.5 Points
Chuckles 55, Laughs 28, Belly Laughs 24
Notes: I'll be honest. I thought this movie could land in the top 100 somewhere but I did not think that it would rank this high on the list. The problem is that we were all way "over-Shrecked" after this movie came out. There were 5 Shrek movies, 2 spin off (Puss in Boots) movies, a video game, Shrek M&M's (which I loved because they were larger and had more chocolate than regular M&M's) but if you let time pass and go back and watch the original movie, this is one of the most hilarious comedy films ever made (animated or otherwise). Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy are nothing short of brilliant. When I first saw this movie, it was so different than any animated movie I'd ever seen. The writers had so much fun and took so many liberties with the "fairy tales," flipping them upside down, like the scene with Princess Fiona singing such a high note that the bird explodes and she cooks it's eggs to feed Shrek and Donkey for breakfast. The theme that we all need someone and that there is someone for everyone - love that. The Robin Hood scene is absolutely my favorite! Just a beautiful, amazingly hilarious movie all the way around! I'm a huge fan of Disney and for decades, we've associated the stories from Brothers Grimm with Disney. This movie is not only proof that Disney doesn't have a monopoly on stories based on fairy tales but I feel like Dream Works has out Disney'd Disney for the first time ever.
Would I watch it again? Absolutely!
13. Top Secret (1984) - 128 Points
Chuckles 74, Laughs 34, Belly Laughs 19
Notes: Shortly after this movie came out, my cousin Jon would enthusiastically ask me, "have you seen Top Secret yet?" Even when I had, he still asked. This movie is made in the Airplane/Naked Gun style of comedy which makes sense since David Zucker wrote and directed all of these movies. Based on his documentary, this movie seems like an embarrassment to Val Kilmer, I guess because he is a Julliard trained actor but this is a seriously silly, stupid and ridiculously funny movie that he should be proud of since it's ranked higher than many other highly-acclaimed and highly-rated comedies. Top Secret is a forgotten gem of comedy movies. I love the underwater fight scene, Val back-spinning through the floor of the restaurant, the hilarious "Germanic" dance in the ballroom, the "skeet surfin'" song/video. Great fun! I remember it being funny. I admit to being slightly shocked that it ranked this high on the list but it earned this spot.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
12. There’s Something about Mary (1998) - 129.5 Points
Chuckles 51, Laughs 35, Belly Laughs 23
Notes: There is something about Cameron Diaz, that for sure. Holy Smokes! She couldn't be cuter or more amazing and is perfectly cast as Mary. I always love Ben Stiller. I was surprised to see Matt Dillon in a comedy. I'd forgotten that Brett Favre is also in this movie. Very funny, awkward, inappropriate and hilarious. This movie scored extremely high because of the 23 belly laughs and is strong throughout.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
11. Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991) - 131 Points
Chuckles 66, Laughs 38, Belly Laughs 20
Notes: There's a part of me that wonders if sequels should be watched and scored and be part of this list but honestly, it's all about laughs and if a sequel is funny enough to land on the 100 funniest movies of all time, so be it. This sequel is nearly as funny as the original and an absolutely hilarious movie to watch, whether you saw the first one or not. The writing is perfection as is Leslie Nielson's delivery. Priscilla Presley is tremendous, just as she was in the original Naked Gun. This movie has non-stop jokes and laugher. I'm sure these movies were inspired by the Airplane movies and they really took that style of comedy to the next level. It's what so many other comedies aspire to be but fall short.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
10. Dinner For Schmucks (2010) - 134.5 Points
Chuckles 55, Laughs 36, Belly Laughs 27
Notes: My cousin Jon told me that this was one of the funniest movies he'd ever seen and I was hoping that it would score high enough to land on the top 100 list and as of May 4. 2022, it is in the top 10. Steve Carrell's character is such an idiot and utter complete tornado of destruction despite best intentions creating some incredibly uncomfortable and hilarious situations. I absolutely could not stop laughing throughout and although there were a lot of chuckles, (to this point, I've watched around 140 movies) and this has the highest total of big (belly) laughs of any movie I've scored. This movie is an absolute home run! Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), who is one of my favorite comedians is hysterical and the very loveable Paul Rudd who's life is being destroyed before his very eyes is consistently awesome. Throw in IRS agent and champion of mind control; Zach Galifianakis for good measure, I mean, this is one of the most underrated comedies that I've seen.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
9. Bridesmaids (2011) - 135 Points
Chuckles 52, Laughs 43, Belly Laughs 22
Notes: This is a hugely funny comedy from beginning to end. With an all star cast of Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Maya Rudolph really delivering incredible performances. It's the story of friendship, dating, relationships and the stress of getting married. Contrary to popular belief, this movie wasn't written by Tina Fey but by Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo. I felt like this movie had the potential to be in the top 15 and frankly, I'm not surprised that it landed in the top 10. One of the funniest movies ever made in my opinion!
Would I watch it again? Yes.
8. Dumb and Dumber to (2014) - 142 Points
Chuckles 118, Laughs 38, Belly Laughs 15
Notes: When I saw this movie listed on Netflix recently, I was so confused. There is another Dumb and Dumber movie (other than the "When Harry Met Lloyd" sequel) and this one stars both Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels and somehow I have never heard of it???? What the heck was I so busy doing in 2014 that I missed this? I thought, maybe it's not funny and it was a flop and that's why I've never heard of it. So, I watched it and honestly, I was laughing so often that I thought that this one might outscore the original. WOW!!! SHOCKING!!! I enjoyed seeing another one of the co-stars from the original movie (won't spoil the surprise) with several similar gags/story lines that were really fun to watch 20 years after the original movie. WAIT? 20 YEARS between movies and now (in 2024 as I write this review) it's 30 YEARS since the original? Unbelievable!!!
Would I watch it again? YES!
7. The Blues Brothers (1980) - 147 Points
Chuckles 58, Laughs 58, Belly Laughs 20
Notes: This is a rare comedy that has the best of everything - a huge budget, big name actors, big name comedians, big name musicians and laughs galore. This film features Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, John Candy, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles and Carrie Fisher to name just a few. Every scene is a delight and this movie is an event. It has been and continues to be one of my all time favorite movies. It's hard to say anything is flawless but... this is about as close as it gets. Freakin' love it!
Fun facts: 104 vehicles were destroyed in this movie (a record at the time). The fancy restaurant (Chez Paul) where the Blues Brothers make a scene trying to convince their former band member to rejoin the band is the same restaurant featured in Ferris Bueller ("You're Abe Froman...the sausage king of Chicago?") and it features one of the first times Pee Wee Herman appears in a major movie (as a waiter).
Would I watch it again? Yes.
6. The Naked Gun (1988) - 149.5 Points
Chuckles 77, Laughs 51, Belly Laughs 20
Notes: I had a feeling this movie would score high and it definitely didn't disappoint. A little weird to see OJ in a movie to be honest but he looked a lot more comfortable in front of a camera than Brett Favre did in Something About Mary. Leslie Nielson is the king of one-liners. The crazy thing is that just about everything Leslie Nielson is in... is a laugh fest. I'll admit that I when I totaled the points, I was a little disappointed so see that it edged out The Blues Brothers but it really is THAT funny and worthy of the high placement it earned on the list.
Would I watch it again? Probably? I've seen it 3x so far and maybe in another 15 or 20 years I'd check it out again. Yes.
5. The Jerk (1979) - 153 Points
Chuckles 80, Laughs 41, Belly Laughs 24
Notes: When I was in Junior High and my neighbor was in high school and he couldn't stop talking about this hilarious movie he'd seen called, The Jerk. When I finally saw the movie 10 years later, I understood why. Steve Martin is utterly incredible and I fell in love with Bernadette Peters and her lovely singing voice, trumpeting ability and fascinating speaking voice, not to mention she was easy on the eyes. I've since seen this movie at least a dozen times including within the last year so I was reluctant to watch and rate it, concerned that it would lose a bit of the funny factor. It didn't. I don't think it can. It's just one of the best and I'm not surprised as this one of the top comedic films that I've ever laid eyes on. Would I watch it again? Definitely!
4. Dumb & Dumber (1994) - 168.5 Points
Chuckles 87, Laughs 56, Belly Laughs 23
Notes: First, I am proud to have been a fan of Jim Carrey since he was on "In Living Color." Until this movie, I hadn't seen Jeff Daniels in a comedy (that I could remember) and together, they knocked it out of the park! This is like the perfect comedy and just one of the funniest movies in existence. I literally can't imagine laughing any harder. I was in tears laughing at the kung fu fight as well as Jeff Daniel's snowball fight. This is one of a select handful of comedies that I can and will watch and never tire of. HOMERUN! Literally every line is quotable and one of the funniest movies ever made!
Would I watch it again? Absolutely! I've seen it many times and will likely watch it several more times. It's one of my absolute favorites.
3. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010) - 174.5 Points
Chuckles 81, Laughs 68, Belly Laughs 22
Notes: When I saw this movie in 2010, it was totally unlike any movie I'd ever seen before and several years later, it is still remarkable. It's part Indie rock show, part video game, part comic book and ALL COMEDY! It's Weird, quirky, awkward and HILARIOUS, my favorite blend of awesome!!! After watching it for the first time, it immediately became one of my favorite movies. I thought there was a chance it might make the top 20 but you never know. There are plenty of comedies that I like a lot that don't score a ton of points but this movie delivers with a plethora of quotable lines and laughs galore. Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim is awesome and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau along with Kieran Culkan are just the best! Cool to see "super heroes," Brie Larson as a indie rocker and Chris Evans playing a "super jerk" actor who is taken out by his own ego (doing the skateboard "thingy" down the rails). "It's called a grind, bro!" Great fun! I love this move!
Scott Pilgrim: My last job is a long story filled with sighs.
Scott Pilgrim: We are Sex Bob-Omb and we are here to make you think about death, and get sad, and stuff.
Crash: This next song goes out to the guy who keeps yelling from the balcony. It’s called, "We hate you, please die!”
Scott Pilgrim: When I'm around you, I kind of feel like I'm on drugs. Not that I do drugs. Unless you do drugs, in which case I do them all the time. All of them.
Knives Chau: I've never even kissed a guy before.
Scott Pilgrim: Hey... me neither.
Wallace Wells: If you want something bad, you have to fight for it. Step up your game, Scott. Break out the L-word.
Scott Pilgrim: Lesbian?
Wallace Wells: The other L-word.
Scott Pilgrim: ...Lesbians?
Scott Pilgrim: I have to go pee due to boredom.
Scott Pilgrim: If I peed my pants would you pretend that I just got wet from the rain?
Kim Pine: Scott, if your life had a face, I would punch it.
Would I watch it again? Absolutely!
2. The Lego Batman Movie (2017) - 176 Points
Chuckles 76, Laughs 72, Belly Laughs 22
Notes: I feel like the average adult is going to think I'm crazy when they see an animated Lego movie ranked this high. My response? (In Batman's most angsty voice) Watch it and tell me that I'm wrong! I don't care if you are not a kid on the outside, your inner kid is still in you somewhere, so find it and watch this movie, regardless of whether a small human being is in the room with you or not. The writers of this movie throw a hurricane of jokes at you throughout the movie. I felt like I was laughing almost every second. They're kind of poking fun of dark, angsty Batman (voiced magnificently by Will Arnett) and there's a huge, all star cast too many to name here but among them, Michael Cera and Zack Galifianakis. Twenty-Two Belly Laughs.... it's like Batman's 9-pack abs. Ridiculously awesome! Be sure that you watch this movie specifically because there are other Lego movies that Batman is in like Lego Batman, DC Heroes. That is NOT this movie. This one is the funniest Lego movie ever made in my opinion.
Robin: “My name’s Richard Grayson, but all the kids at the orphanage call me Dick.”
Batman: “Well, children can be cruel.”
Robin: “Hey, I was thinking. If I’m gonna be a superhero, and go on awesome superhero missions like this one, can we use code names? Mine can be Robin.”
Batman: “I’m sorry, say that again?”
Robin: “Robin.”
Batman: “As in the small, Midwestern, frail bird?”
Robin: “Yeah, and I already have a catch phrase. Tweet, tweet, on the street.”
Batman: “Hard pass.”
Robin: “And a song.”
Robin: (Sings) “Fly, Robin, fly.”
Batman: “Harder pass.”
Batman: “Hey, ‘puter, I’m home.”
Computer: “Welcome home, sir. Initializing Batcave music. So, did anything exciting happened today?”
Batman: “I saved the city again. It was off the chain. Anyway, I should probably have some grub.”
Would I watch it again? Yes! I've seen it 5x already and can't wait to watch it again!
1. Napoleon Dynamite (2004) - 198.5 Points
Chuckles 105, Laughs 71, Belly Laughs 25
Notes:
I loved this movie so much that I bought 5 copies when it came out on DVD and made my employees at the office watch it so we could talk/laugh about it. That being said, I hadn't seen it now in a decade and when I began this undertaking, I was concerned that I might not find it that funny any more. I was thinking that it might not make the top 20 but I was determined to score it honestly/objectively and see where it landed. My concerns were unfounded. This is the best comedy because of great casting and great acting. It was unlike any movie I'd ever seen. Gosh! It's totally original, quotable, memorable, quirky, weird, fantastic and hilarious!
Before you discredit this movie as being The Funniest Movie on the top 100 of all comedies, here are 6 reasons that this movie deserves the #1 spot.
Pedro: What do you mean?
Napoleon Dynamite: You know, like nunchuck skills, bo hunting skills, computer hacking skills. Girls only like guys who have great skills.
Pedro: Like, what are my skills?
Napoleon Dynamite: Well, you have a sweet bike. And you're really good at hooking up with chicks. Plus you're like the only guy at school who has a mustache.
Kip: Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've chatting online with babes, all day
Grandma: Dang it, Napoleon, make yourself a dang quesadilla!
Napoleon Dynamite: I see you're drinking one percent. Is that cause you think you're fat? Cause you're not. You could be drinking whole milk if you wanted to.
Napoleon Dynamite: It's a liger. It's probably my favorite animal. It defends itself with its growing skills in the field of magic.
Napoleon Dynamite: Grandma just called. She said you should go home because you're ruining everyone's lives and eating all the steak!
Rex Kwon Do: I'm Rex, founder of the Rex Kwon Do self-defense system! After one week with me in my dojo, you'll be prepared to defend yourself with the strength of a grizzly, the reflexes of a puma, and the wisdom of a man.
Rex Kwon Do: Take a look at what I'm wearing, people! [in sunglasses and matching American flag pants and bandana] You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I'm wearing these bad boys? Forget about it! Last off, my students will learn about self respect. You think anybody thinks I'm a failure because I go home to Starla at night? [Points at a photo of his wife, a blonde, tan, very masculine looking body-builder] Forget about it!
Kip Dynamite: "Your Mom goes to college!"
Napoleon Dynamite: "Tina, you fat lard. Eat your ham!"
Napoleon Dynamite: "I caught you a delicious bass!"
Rex Kwon Do: "Break the wrist and walk away!"
The magic is that all of this is done without any huge stars to carry the film but with perfect casting. Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez, Tina Majorino, Aaron Ruell, Jon Gries, Haylie Duff, Emily Kennard, Shondrella Avery, Sandy Martin, Diedrich Bader, all of them are amazing! This movie wasn't written by any famous writers. It was written by Jared and Jerusha Hess who were unknown to most folks at the time. This film was made in 22 days for $400,000. For comparison, 2021's Free Guy's budget was between $100-125 Million, roughly 300x the budget of Napoleon Dynamite.
Would I watch it again? (In Kip Dynamite's voice) "You know I will!" I have to remember to watch this movie like every 5 years for the rest of my life. If you watched it once and didn't love it, I promise it's funnier the second time around, which is unusual for most comedy movies.
PS: If you haven't seen the wedding scene after the credits - you're missing out on some HUGE laughs as Kip sings about his love for technology and Napoleon tames a wild stallion!
PSS: On 2/24/24 I had a chance to watch the movie once again, this time with the actors who played Uncle Rico, Pedro and Napoleon Dynamite at the Capital Theatre in Clearwater FL and enjoyed a fun and lively Q and A at the end! Great guys!!!
- 105 Chuckles (2nd most of any movie watched to date)
- 71 Laughs (2nd most of any movie watched to date)
- 25 Belly Laughs (2nd most of any movie watched to date)
- 201 Total Laughs (most of any movie watched to date)
- This is one of the extremely rare movies that is actually funnier the 2nd time you watch it and even funnier the 3rd time. If you've watched it only once, watch it again. If you haven't seen it in years - watch it again. You won't regret it.
- Nearly EVERY LINE of this movie is quotable and has become iconic.
"I don't know if I should shake your hand or kiss it or bow or what. I feel like breakdancin'!"
