Chuckles 28, Laughs 3, Belly Laughs 1
Notes: I LOVED this movie when I was a kid and I became a huge fan of the Marx Brothers, especially Harpo. As an adult, I find that this movie is not nearly as funny as the other movies and that Groucho is my favorite. Funny how that happens. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of chuckles. I love it when Groucho dances and it was fantastic to see both Chico and Harpo playing a duete on the piano. There is lots of music, lots of singing. Really an interesting scene with a woman singing a lullaby in the store to a baby with intentionally no emotion. Harpo plays lots of instruments like the harp, piano, violin and cello. Although the lowest scoring Marx Brothers film for me, I still had fun watching it. Would I watch it again? I'm not sure. Twice might have been enough.

Notes: This is really a shocker. I knew this movie was funny but had no idea that it was THIS funny! I'm a huge fan of the Marx Brothers and I've been watching their entire movie catalog. For me, this was the funniest one. I love Groucho's song at the beginning and his dance as it hilariously sets the tone for the entire film. Groucho, Harpo and Chico are absolutely wild in this one. Love the chaos in the classroom scene, a rare opportunity to hear Chico sing and see Groucho play guitar. This had the candy "Lifesavers" way back in 1932? I also love these films as they are a great way to see the styles of the time. Love the Art Deco in most of their films and in this one, seeing men in suits and ties with hats going to a football game or in another movie, go to the racetrack. What would they think of if they could glimpse the future with people wearing pajamas to the grocery store? I came to the re-realization that Bugs Bunny is based on Groucho Marx. I knew that, forgot that and re-remembered watching this film. iWould I watch it again? Yes. Chuckles 57, Laughs 19, Belly Laughs 5
Notes: This is the first Marx Brothers movie, a movie about the "Great Florida Land Rush" which apparently was the talk of America in the late 1920. Interestingly, this movie was released the same year as the Great Depression hit the US. That aside, this movie is hilarious and would prove to be the launching pad for Groucho, Harpo and Chico's 13 movies over the next 20 years that follow pretty much the same formula that begins with this movie. Would I watch it again? Yes. |
