Chuckles 42, Laughs 8, Belly Laughs 11
Notes: I am a huge fan of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre (both are currently on my 100 funniest movies of all time list) and although Jared and Jerusha Hess wrote all 3 movies, I honestly had very little interest in this one because of the name of the film to be honest and it had really bad reviews. I was on Amazon Prime tonight looking for a comedy to watch and this one was about to leave in a week so I thought I'd at least start it. The credits starts like the other two movies and has "Hess feel" through the film. I was surprised to see Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Hector Jimenez (Nacho Libre) as well as Jennifer Coolidge and Sam Rockwell so I settled in and laughed (more than I thought I would). It's stupid but look around, lots of comedies are stupid. It's awkward, gross but it's also funny. I was surprised at how many actual "belly laughs" it scored. The basic plot is a teenager in rural Utah has his sci-fi story stolen by a famous author. It didn't score as high as Napoleon or Nacho but it holds it's own. If you love quirky comedies, this is your film. I happen to be a big fan of quirky. I'd never seen the protagonist (Michael Angarano) before (or since) but he did a good job. This film scored pretty high because there were quite a few chuckles and actual big laughs for me. It's kinda like a movie that we would have made when we were teenagers in the 80's. Would I watch it again? Probably.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022) - 39.5 Points
Chuckles 22, Laughs 13, Belly Laughs 5 Notes: I almost lost my mind when I saw this trailer in the movie theatre and it didn't disappoint when I saw it (again, in the theatre) later that year. Now, it's streaming on Netflix and I finally got to rate it. I freaking love Nicholas Cage and this was so fun to see him poking fun at himself. Also so weird to see the very young Nick Cage (Valley Girl) as his alter-ego! Freaking genius! I also am a huge fan of actors playing themselves like the movie, Being John Malkovich. I feel like I laughed a lot more the first time I saw it but I still laughed this (second) time. Even though it didn't score a ton of points, this is fun and worth watching. Pedro Pascal is so hilarious as a Nick Cage super fan! Love both those guys! Would I watch it again? Heck yes I would! Chuckle 19, Laughs 5, Belly Laughs 2
Notes: I had never heard of this movie but I was at a thrift store, looking for DVD's of comedies I can't find streaming when I came across this movie. I bought it because I love Jack Black and I'm always willing to watch his movies. I expected that it must not be good or I'd have heard of it so my expectations were super low and honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. This movie also stars Emily Blunt who looks like she could be Kristin Wiig's sister. At first I thought it was Kristin Wiig. I digress. This is kind of a rom-com and if you're a Jack Black fan, I think you might like it but keep your expectations low and see what happens. It's kinda fun and sweet. Would I watch this one again? Maybe with my grandson one day. |
